The Regata Storica is one of the most distinguishing and typical celebration of Venice. It takes place on the water, the distinguished element that has always characterized this particular city. The Regatta takes place on the water of the longest and largest canal, the Grand Canal. Its origins are dated back to the second half of the 13th Century when Giovanni Soranzo decided to celebrate the magnificence of the city with a water parade when a foreign prince came to Venice or for the election of a Doge or a new Pope. On the other side, it was also vital, for this city whose prosperity was given by the sea and the foreign trades, to have expert oarsmen. The Regata Storica is the main and most important regatta of the year but any island of the lagoon has its own regatta. It takes place on the first Sunday afternoon of September.
The characteristics of the Regata
Firstly there is the historical procession and then the real competition. The parade is a colourful precession of historical boats of the 16th century manned with oarsmen in period costume. The Bucintoro, the boat representing the Serenissima, is at its head. The procession commemorates the welcome given to Caterina Cornaro, Queen of Cyprus, when she renounced to the throne in favour of Venice. Then comes the competition. Audience are really ardent, every neighbourhood has its team, even fan are a form of entertainment for tourists. When the Regatta ends, canals are filled with boats full of people that enjoy themselves.
